The Bible is our all-sufficient rule for faith and practice. This statement
of what we believe is intended as a basis of fellowship among us (1 Cor 1:10;
Acts 2:42). The language employed in this statement is not inspired nor
contended for, but the truth set forth is held to be essential. No claim is made
that is contains all biblical truth, only that is covers our need as to these
fundamental doctrines. We affirm the 16 Statements of Fundamental Truths of the
Assemblies of God, as well as the classic formulations of the Apostles, Creed
and the Nicene Creed.
1. The Scriptures
We believe that the Bible is uniquely produced by God ("inspired" or
literally "God-breathed") through the agency of men and women he chose and is
therefore without error. Is is our authoratiative rule of faith and conduct. (2
Tim 3:15-17)
2. The One True God
We believe in the one true God, Creator of all things, Redeemer of mankind.
He eternally exists in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, together
called the Trinity - each fully God, acting together, united in purpose, yet
distinct in function. (Deut 6:4; Isa 43:10-12; Matt 28:19; John 14:16-17)
3. The Deity and Humanity of Jesus Christ
We believe that Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity, was without
original sin (born of a virgin), lived a sinless and fully human life on earth,
and out of his great love voluntarily paid the price (atoned) for our failings
(sins) by dying on the cross as our substitute. This accomplishes restoration
and rescue (salvation) for all who receive this gift (grace) by trusting in him
alone. He rose physically from the dead and is the only bridge (mediator)
between us and God. We believe in his promised return to complete the
establishment of his eternal kingdom. (Matt 1:23; Luke 1:31, 35; Heb 4:15; 7:26;
1 John 4:2, 3; 1Cor 15:3; Matt 28:6; Heb 9:15; 1 Thess 4:16)
4. The Fall and Salvation of Man
We believe that God originally created humans good and to have relationship
(fellowship) with him, but they defied God and chose not to trust him (sinfully
went their own way). As a result, we need God's gift (saving grace) the end our
separation (alienation) from him. Salvation comes only through God's saving
grace-not human effort-and must be received personally by a change of
perspective (repentance) and trusting obedience (faith). (Gen 1:26; Rom 5:12-19;
Eph 2:8)
5. Holy Spirit and the Life He Enables
We believe that the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, is the one
who enlightens the mind of those separated from God (sinners), awakens in them a
recognition of their need for a rescuer (Savior), and brings them to new life
(regenerates them). At the point of acceptance of rescue (salvation), he becomes
an ever-present helper within (indwells) every believer and becomes for them the
source of assurance, strength, and wisdom, and further endows each believer with
gifts for service (ministry), spiritual gifts (including the experience of
Baptism in the Holy Spirit), and to bear fruit for the glory of God. (John
16:8-15; Rom 8:9-17; Acts 1:8, 2:1; 1 Cor 12; Gal 5:22)
We further believe that life with Jesus Christ makes a difference! In
submitting to the Holy Spirit, believers are enabled to have an enjoyable and
meaningful life. The essential accomplishment of a genuine saving relationship
with Jesus Christ is a life which pleasures and honors God (a life of
holiness-separation to God and from sin-and obedience). (1 Thess 5:23; Heb
12:14; Gal 5:16-25)
6. The Church
We believe that through our union with Jesus Christ all believers become
members of his body, the Church. There is one true Church universal, not
restricted to any one group or denomination, but comprised of all those who
acknowledge Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. The Bible instructs believers to
gather together to devote themselves to honoring God (worship), communicating
with him (prayer), learning together (the teaching of the Word), observing acts
Christ commanded which express community involvement and participation (baptism
and communion), relationship with each other (fellowship), helping each other
(service), and reaching out to all mankind (missions and evangelism). (Eph
4:11-16; 1 Cor 12:12-28; Heb 10:25; Matt 28:19)
7. Human and Cosmic Destiny
We believe that death seals the eternal destiny of each person: our
relationship with God at the point of death defines our position for all
eternity. For all mankind, there will be a resurrection of the body and a
judgement in which God will justly determine the destiny of every individual.
Those who have experienced God's rescue will enjoy eternal fellowship with God
on a restored earth. Those who have chosen their own way, rejecting the
salvation offered by God, will suffer eternal separation from God and his
goodness, the "second death". (Matt 25:31-46; 1 Cor 15:12-28; 1 Thess 4:13-18;
Rev 20:11-13; 21:1-5, 21:1-5, 22:1-5; Mark 9:43-48; Rev 19:20, 20:11-15, 21:8) |
