Philippians

Reader #2: Beginning AND Finishing

Reading: Philippians 1:3-11

As Paul writes his letter of encouragement to the people of Philippi, he wastes no time reminding them that though they’ve begun the work of grace, they need to be faithful, diligent and focused on finishing the work of grace.  In fact, Paul says that God will be the one to see that grace works to its completion.  How encouraging is that!  You and I are never alone in this journey of receiving and living out the grace of the Gospel!
The problem of course, is that we do live in a culture that is changing so fast that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to stay focused, driven and committed to things.  We all have to acknowledge that our faith journey can and sometimes will be complicated with life’s distractions, temptations and failures.

I think Paul understood this 2000 years ago and it’s why we find his letter so relevant today in the 21st century.  As Paul wants the Philippian church to be encouraged, so we should be encouraged in our faith.  It’s a long journey with many bumps and road blocks…but God is faithful and ever-loving to us.  May we all remember that the business of Gospel is a serious thing, but also centered in grace which means we are always loved, forgiven and believed in!

Discussion:
Who have been great examples of grace in your life?  Would you say their example helped mature your faith?
Have you ever had a moment in life when you really felt like God was carrying you through a difficult time? Might that have helped form your understanding of Paul’s words in v.5-6?

Practice:
As these scriptures remind us that faith is a long journey, it sometimes helps to be able to look back on our life and remember how God faithfully lead and provided for us in difficult times. Begin the practice of occasionally writing out your prayers.  Keep them in a safe place and then once or twice a year come back and read the prayers.  You’ll be amazed at God’s faithfulness and love!
