Philippians Reader 10: Mentoring Moments Reading: Philippians 3:17-4:1; I Corinthians 11 Paul ends Philippians 3 by reminding the church to follow his example and beware of those who take "other paths." He also spends some time refocusing them on the hope of Christ Followers - the return of Jesus to once and for all restore us and the world to its intended state. The section ends with his heartfelt expression of love for the Philippians, who he has taught and mentored in the faith. Many of us have experienced the power of an effective mentor. Whether a teacher, friend, parent, pastor, or leader, mentors have the unique ability to encourage greatness and even point out areas of weakness we do not see. Our shared stories as a culture almost always involve some type of teacher / mentor whose influence is vital to the story. Mentors can be someone we know personally or"distant mentors" (authors, teachers, leaders) that we never meet. The influence of a leader can be positive or negative. Paul here warns that there are those who will try to lead them down another path. He reminds them to follow his example and teaching. Paul's example reminds us that we both need mentors and need to mentor others. Jesus' final command was to "go and make disciples" - not church members, attendees, or converts, but disciples.
Discuss Who am I currently involved in a mentoring or discipleship relationship with? Is it possible God has specifically brought some people into my life I am meant to lead? Practice
